Thoughts on Spiritual Music
James Baldwin writing about the Negro Spiritual once said, "There is no music like that music. No drama like the drama of the saints rejoicing, the sinner moaning, the tambourines racing and all those voices coming together and crying 'Holy Unto The Lord'. The Negro Spiritual is a unique form of musical expression created by the sons and daughters of former slaves in America. It is a motive, cathardic a music that provides hope to the oppressed. Poured into this musical expression, are the sounds of a people resolute in their commitment to overcome. The Negro Spiritual is a musical expression that celebrates life the quest for liberty in America. It carries within its bosom the style & legacy of another continent, the continent of Africa. The Negro Spiritual is about the Black man's vision of deliverance from both spiritual & social shackles. To the whiter Christian community, the Negro Spiritual has always been a disturbing kind of joy. But to the Black man the Negro Spiritual is a beacon of hope & grace in a long dark night of despair. They are his songs about good news in bad times. The music provided comfort & solace. The lyrics provided hope & courage." One great writer once wrote, "We acknowledge our inability to express in words what our heart is singing. Whenever people are singing at the harvest, in the vineyards or elsewhere, in the ardor of their work, are so gladden by the words of their song that their joy becomes too great to express in words, they leave the syllables be & burst into exhaltation and who beseens this jubilation more than the unutterable God. And when you cannot utter it and yet must not withhold it what remains for you to do but jubilate and let your heart exhalt wordlessly by breaking down all barriers in the immeasurable fullness of your joy." |

Although it is not commonly acknowledged, African presence in what is now described as the United States, does not begin or end with the institution of slavery. Despite this barbaric system giving rise to the most horrific and protracted holocaust known to civilization, the undaunting spirit of African people has proven a worthy match.
The story of black pioneers who actively participated in the "town building" movement in the United States, is an incredible yet neglected story. These women and men, facing treacherous physical surroundings and even more harsh and unaccommodating human environments, circumvented the legislated tyranny of racial supremacy by cultivating communities in areas whites considered uninhabitable.
Whether erected as stations along the Underground Railroad or strategic outposts in desolate territories, these settlements were often secluded in swamp lands, deserts, sand dunes or along rocky cliffs. They existed in nearly every state (if not all), as well as in Canada and Mexico.
