North Chapel's History
North Chapel School was originally named Mt. Pleasant School, which was located approximately 1 1/4 miles SW of former site of North Chapel School. It was among the first public schools for blacks in that area.
Rapid community growth and development caused an increase in the number of school-aged children. This community expansion placed the school farther north where most of the pupils lived. To accomodate these pupils, it was decided to build another facility north of Peavine Creek.
In October of 1903, J.B.McNeely who was the first to teach at the new school, naming it North Chapel. It is believed that this name was chosen because of the buildings location. The building was located 'north' of Mt. Pleasant School and was built by the people for the children who lived north of Peavine Creek. This facility was utilized for seven years after which the county built a larger building adding another classroom of 320 square feet. These additions took place in 1910 and 1918. The building was in use in 1922.
In 1933 an additional building of brick was built on the same site, which accommodated seven classrooms. North Chapel became fully accredited and graduated its first class in 1936. The main building was destroyed by fire in 1946 causing cafeteria activities and some classes to be relocated in the remaining buildings. Out of necessity some students were transferred to a local church, West Point and Post Oak Elementary Schools. In the midst of this situation, a new and larger facility was constructed opening in 1947. For the first time all pupils were under one roof, after an elementary wing was added five years later.
North Chapel operated as a fully accredited school with pupils in grades 1-12 from 1952 to 1967. In September of 1967, grades 1,2,5,8 and 9 were transferred to Sabine High School, in compliance with mandates of the Civil Rights Act. Other pupil could attend either school. In the fall of 1969, North Chapel School discontinued and all pupils attended Sabine School.
